Tracking DroidDeck v0.4.0

DroidDeck download & install: the complete guide

Every official step, in order, from downloading the APK to signing in to Steam — including the one Developer-options setting that trips up almost every first install.

Download only from the official GitHub releases

The DroidDeck project has no official website, and its README warns: “Do not click on any download links from websites claiming to be the DroidDeck team.” We don’t host APK files on this site. The download button below goes straight to github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck/releases.

Before you start

Check these first — if your device misses the GPU bar, nothing below will work:

  • Android 9 or newer
  • Snapdragon chip with Adreno 730 or newer graphics (or 8xx). Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR and Adreno 710 are unsupported; Adreno 6xx is experimental
  • About 3 GB free for the Linux runtime, plus ~1.1 GB if you want the optional desktop and emulators — and room for games on top
  • No root required
  • Access to Developer options (for one setting, explained in step 4)

Not sure whether your chip qualifies? Check the compatible devices list.

The install, step by step

Step 1: Download the APK

Open the official releases page and download the latest APK (the current release is v0.4.0, published October 12, 2026; builds are ARM64). Grab it on the device you’re installing to — or transfer the file to it afterwards.

Step 2: Install the APK

Tap the downloaded file. Android will ask you to allow installing apps from this source the first time — approve it for your browser or file manager, then complete the install. (If the prompt doesn’t appear and nothing happens, open Settings and search for “Install unknown apps”.)

Step 3: Install the Linux runtime

On first launch, DroidDeck walks you through installing its Linux runtime — this is the big one, about 3 GB. Stay on Wi-Fi and keep the device plugged in or well charged while it downloads.

Step 4: Turn off “Restrict child processes”

This is the step people miss. Before Steam can launch, you must turn off “Restrict child processes” in Developer options — the official README calls this out explicitly, because Android’s process killer otherwise closes Steam’s background processes and the client quits moments after opening.

If your device is on Android 12 or 13, that toggle may not be exposed at all. In that case, the app handles it: on the first launch attempt, DroidDeck presents a “Fix it for me” button that automates the setup.

Step 5: Press Play and sign in

Press Play in DroidDeck and sign in with your Steam account. Steam itself downloads on first launch, then you’re at Big Picture — same library, cloud saves and achievements as on any other Steam device.

Optional extras worth knowing

  • Desktop & apps (~1.1 GB): adds a Linux desktop with Firefox and a set of emulators (DuckStation, PPSSPP, RPCS3 and friends).
  • Store: installs Linux apps and games from Flathub through Flatpak, with options for AppImages and setup scripts.
  • Stores: sign in to GOG, Epic Games and Amazon Games, browse your libraries, and download games that then launch through Proton as non-Steam titles.

If something goes wrong

  • Steam opens and immediately quits: almost always the child-processes setting from step 4 — double-check Developer options, or use “Fix it for me” on Android 12/13.
  • Performance or crashes in games: compatibility varies by device and title — the project itself says hardware validation is limited. Per-game reports live in the community Discord.
  • Reporting a bug: use Share logs in DroidDeck (Setup, or the session drawer) to export a scrubbed log zip, then post it in the Discord’s bug-reports forum.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DroidDeck APK safe to install? +

Install it only from the official GitHub releases. The project is open source (GPL-3.0), so the code is public, and its README explicitly warns users not to click download links from websites claiming to be the DroidDeck team. We don't host APK files on this site — our links go straight to the official repository.

Is DroidDeck on the Play Store? +

No. The official installation path is the APK from GitHub Releases, as described in the project's own README.

Does DroidDeck need root? +

No. It runs without root on supported devices.

How much storage does it need? +

Plan for about 3 GB for the Linux runtime, plus roughly 1.1 GB more if you install the optional desktop and emulators. Games are additional.

Will it run on my phone, or only on handhelds? +

The same requirements apply to phones and handhelds: Android 9 or newer with a Snapdragon chip and Adreno 730+ (or 8xx) graphics. Handhelds simply add built-in controls. Check the compatible devices page for details.

Is DroidDeck a streaming app like Steam Link? +

No. Games run locally on the device. Steam Link streams from a gaming PC; DroidDeck does not need a PC at all.
